ILIGAN City ― Mining in Rogongon has a long history, as highlighted by Rady Pugoy, the village chief of this barangay, during the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday, October 17. The sole agenda for the session was an inquiry into the reported mining activities in the area.
When questioned by City Councilor Ramil Emborong about his actions regarding this issue, Pugoy stated that he had reported the matter to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). However, when pressed further about the existence of supporting documents for his actions, he couldn't provide any, suggesting that there were no written records or accompanying evidence to confirm his claims.
It's worth noting that Pugoy has served as barangay captain for three terms, totaling about nine years.
During the session, it was revealed that no permits had been issued to individuals or mining companies operating in the area, as stated by Engr. Felizardo Gaca, an official from the MGB under the DENR. Additionally, it came to light that a case had been filed against an individual with the alias Sammy Ong from Opol, Misamis Oriental, in connection with alleged illegal mining activities.
It was also discovered that permits were only issued to areas within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Atty. Alberto Suico, Jr., the Chief Executive Officer of a mining company called the Philippine Mining Development Corporation, mentioned that they had applied for permits from the relevant government agencies.
However, they encountered several challenges, including meeting the requirements and securing the required capitalization. They also lacked the proper equipment, like a suitable backhoe.
As a result, they were exploring partnerships and had initiated discussions with potential partners, such as the group led by Atty. Warren Lim from this city.
