ILIGAN City ― Outgoing city vice mayor Jemar Vera Cruz yesterday said that the Colegio de Iligan must be continued by the incoming administration.
Vera Cruz in a statement on air was directing his statement to mayor-elect, Congressman Frederick Siao who defeated his last election in the post for mayor, adding that “it’s a pity for parents who can’t afford to study in other institutions as this is offered free” city.
He then enjoined the parents to “conduct a revolution if necessary” if only to have this “Colegio” continued.
To recall, the “Colegio de Iligan” was established in 2019 “'through a city ordinance establishing such but up to this time,” it still has to earn the accreditation of the Commission on Higher Education.
The reason for that, it was learned is because said educational facility could not come up still with its own land and building structures.
Earlier former city councilor Jose Zalsos said that if in the future, the “Colegio” could comply with the CHED’s requirement for accreditation, “it is not retroactive.”
He should know he said as he had been with St. Peter’s College here for a long time so those who had been students there from 2019 are in danger of “just wasting their time” in studying in said college.
The said facility, to note, is located inside the area of the then National Steel Corporation where the city is in a tug of war with the liquidator of said steel plant as to its ownership.
The city’s claim is based upon the steel plant’s unpaid real property taxes amounting to over P4 billion even as the liquidator represents 10 banks for unpaid loans.
