MOTORCYCLE-RIDING assailants shot and killed a prominent urology surgeon here and also injured an innocent bystander in Barangay Nazareth this morning.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Office spokesman Maj. Evan Viñas said Dr. Raul Winston Andutan, medical director of the Jesuit-owned Maria Reyna Hospital, was killed on the spot with six gunshot wounds to his body.

Viñas said the victim was on the way to Maria Reyna Hospital when he was waylaid by the gunmen along 12th-29th streets at around 10 am in Barangay Nazareth.

“Apparently the gunmen (trailed) the victim from his house until they reached here,” Lt. Mirasol Capina, deputy commander of the Nazareth Police Station.

Witnesses told reporters that they heard four successive gunshots after the gunmen overtook Andutan’s silver Toyota Fortuner in the corner of 12th and 29th streets.

Capina said Andutan’s Fortuner hit a motorcycle ridden by a certain John Mark Galario before ramming into a store.

She said Galario sustained injuries on his shoulders and was rushed to the hospital.

The NGO Health Action for Human Rights condemned the killing and said, “the death of Dr. Anduyan confirms the continuing impunity in the country.”

The Council For Health and Development, an organization of medical practitioners here, also condemned the killing.

“He was known to his colleagues and patients as an excellent surgeon and a compassionate friend,” the group said in a statement.

Mayor Oscar Moreno ordered the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office to run after the killers of Andutan.

The killing of Andutan came less than a month after gunmen killed Roland Sherwin Uy, 45, son of incumbent Congressman and mayoral candidate Rolando Uy on Nov. 9, 2021.

Until this day, police have yet to arrest the killers of Uy despite a P14-million money raised for their arrests.
