CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy led the launch of the City Small-Scale Tilapia/Hito Hatchery Technology Demonstration in Barangay Tuburan on October 8.

The project aims to empower local farmers through sustainable aquaculture practices.

The demonstration featured innovative techniques such as pond liner installation, Azolla culture as alternative feed, and improved breeding methods.

The hatchery is expected to produce 30,000 tilapia and hito fingerlings annually, which will be distributed for free to farmers.

The initiative is a result of collaboration between the city’s Aquatic Resources Management Division, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Misamis Oriental, and the local government of Barangay Tuburan.

Mayor Uy emphasized that the project will make aquaculture more accessible to farmers, boosting their livelihoods.

City officials, including Councilor Juancho Pascual and City Agriculturist Engr. Bernie Daba Jr., attended the launch to show their support.

The project is part of the city’s efforts to develop its agriculture sector and support rural communities.
