THE Night Market Management Committee which is chaired by Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy himself has conveyed a strong message to beneficiaries of the night market program.
As I have relayed to the Osmeña street vendors, if the night market will still result in garbage thrown and scattered everywhere by them, traffic congestion, unkempt selling slots, dirty and unsanitary surroundings, and selling beyond what is allowed both in time and space, then the night market days will be reduced to Fridays and Saturdays only.
This decision was reached because of what may be called abuses and neglect of regulations by night market beneficiaries.
Night market beneficiaries must always remember that what they are holding are only privileges granted by the Uy administration which can be taken back from them anytime.
The Night Market Management Committee which I co-chair with Mayor Uy first addressed the traffic congestion problem at Osmeña corner JR Borja streets by disallowing vendors from occupying the street in that area thus opening the intersection to vehicular traffic.
It has effectively eased vehicular traffic. This decision was paired with closing the U-Turn slot at JR Borja-Daumar streets by the RTA, preventing traffic congestion in that area during night market hours.
The other groups of night market beneficiaries will be tackled by the Committee next ― Daumar street and Guillermo street night market vendors.
The Daumar street beneficiaries are also noted to be disregarding regulations by inching their way into Yacapin, Vicente Roa, and JR Borja streets, despite constant reminders from designated Committee deputies and members.
They are also observed to have increased their respective slots without approval from the Committee.
It is timely that the new chairman of the Economic Enterprise Committee of the City Council, Atty. Edgar Cabanlas, has aggressively addressed the attendant problems in the public markets.
The Night Market Management Committee shall do likewise.
