Every year, as the Yuletide season approaches we come to a point where we formulate a “New Year’s resolution” to better or improve ourselves in the coming new year, whether it’s for health reasons, personal, or even for relationship purposes – those “Ayaw ko na magpaka-T! sa pag-ibig” moments. But somehow or most the time it’s just a “one-time thing,” that we enjoy sharing on social media that no longer holds any value nor meaning. But...

First off, I admit I am not a strong believer in New Year’s resolutions, and I am not discouraging anyone not to make one either. But I would like to explain why it’s no longer relevant, I asked a couple of my friends and they shared their thoughts about New Year’s resolution, and we came to an interesting conclusion.

Back when social media was still a baby most of you may agree to my understanding of what a “New Year resolution” is – a form of reflection. As a new year approaches you reflect on the things that happened that year that you want to change in the coming year. Thus, the notion “New Year, New Me” comes to mind. But, if you think about it, you don’t have to wait till December to start making a list of self-change.

I, along with other people would like to tell you the same thing – That self-improvement is possible all year round, it doesn’t need a specific date, season or a new year to change your habits, attitude, or outlook in life, especially when it’s for the better; it just takes a strong-will and self-discipline to accomplish whatever goal you set for yourself.

Dan Albert Alerta Pacquiao of Project Lupad shares “Ang new year’s resolution kay isa sa pamaagi para mag improve ta and ma-achieve ato goals sa isa ka tuig. Pero di na kailangan ug new year’s resolution para magusab ta. Pwede man ta mag-improve anytime. Naay uban resolution nga ma-sustain nato throughout the year, naa pud uban nga taman lang first week sa January. Naa ra jud sa ato ang pagbago to become a better version of ourselves.”

“New Year's Resolutions are made to be broken (mostly). However, if the one commits heartily to it then it can be a good practice. As the New Year comes, a new start; to start correcting mistakes of the past year, to start a good relationship or a good habit, but without consistency, it will just come to pass like dust in the wind. I believe that if one is determined to change he can change no matter when or how. Having a New Year's resolution can be help – It’s like a draft or a pattern of your goal for the whole year,” Shari Man-asil LapizVlogger at ShaiTalks shared.

Meanwhile, Rommel “Master Popi” AlabaM.O.R., DJ, Vlogger said “If a person doubts a New Year’s resolution, then any resolution they make, New Year or not, will never work for them. It's up to the belief system of a person. But it helps! Even if some will fail, having the struggle to pursuing a certain goal is better than not acting at all.”

At the end of the day, if change is needed or a necessity we shouldn’t wait. I believe that the true meaning of a New Year resolution, shouldn’t be only a one-time thing you do during the Yuletide season, but it’s a process that you deal with all year round, an improvement that you do not only for the people around you but for yourself as well. Having a New Year resolution or not is still up for debate, but the meaning of it still remains – something that would greatly benefit you and you alone.
