I WOULD like to go back to my previous column about my trip to Surigao del Sur.
On our way to Enchanted River of Hinautan from Bayuga, I noticed that we passed through mostly forested areas, lush in green and tall trees. A local resident said, “Sir, the other side of Surigao is ‘upaw’ (bald),” referring to Surigao del Norte.
It is known that mining abuses in that area are still ongoing and so, as described by residents, “upaw nga mga bukid” as a result of open-pit nickel mining.
Now, it is confirmed. Violations of mining laws and procedures have been rampant. Their closeness to those in the corridors of power allows these to happen. But expect the cancelation of permits in the near future.
Environment Secretary Gina Lopez means business. Her resolve should not be taken lightly by anyone. If I get hold of some pictures, expect them on Facebook.
I hope the same investigation would happen in the city.

Sen. Riza Hontiveros came to the defense of her colleague, and asked the Senate to defend one of their own.
Perhaps, Ms. Hontiveros would like to visit the Anti-Sexual Harassment Law. The law is very clear. Or, perhaps again, Ms. Hontiveros thinks that the law is only applicable to men, and women are exempted.
Immorality committed by some if not, many in the government service has become a non-issue and seems to have become acceptable. “Huwag lang magpahuli” (Just don’t get caught).
I doubt if the Senate would heed her call. Otherwise, they would be opening cans of worm, and it would boomerang on them.
As for her calling the President a misogynistic, Hontiveros should endeavor to know our President better. I am surprised her being a member of Akbayan or a known leader of that group should have more knowledge of Duterte than her actuation indicates.

It is heartening to hear that the Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) could take off next year. I wish the government will engage more than one contractor to do this so that it would shorten the time of completion. An early completion would be good for peace in Mindanao.
The government should also serve a stern warning to saboteurs. This project should not be disturbed, hampered and delayed by any, individual or group for any reason.
The MRP is a dream and has been one for Mindanaoans. Had we have this a long time ago. Mindanao would have been a better place than it is today, and more peaceful, too.
Let’s have a combination of experts from different countries and have them agree to a common design. Divide the length of the project, and commence simultaneously. We need not wait for five years or more. This is too vital for any delay.
