ILIGAN City ― If the news about weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz had exploded triumphantly earlier here in the country, it would have stolen much of the thunder from the Sona of PDU30.

So much of the attention of the country was focused on Monday’s Sona. And who else but Digong was the star. And he had all the thunder to himself. Of course, there were other “supporting” casts. Like the progressive groups making some “thunder” so they could be heard too.

Among the “thunder” which he sounded again was this thing about garbage. Which we have almost forgotten about. That was this garbage from Canada taken to Misamis Oriental. It took several howling sounds ― from Cong. Frederick Siao and the congressmen from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental.

And of course, from the President himself!

He had made so much noise about it that his remarks were included in one episode of Trevor Noah, an international stand-up comedian. There, Digong’s remarks were repeated.

Like him saying to Canada's leader Justin Trudeau that a “welcome party” should be organized by that country for its arrival. And there was that video about Digong saying it.

Digong also touched on the “Balaginga bells.” Which the Americans have considered them as some kind of “trophy” for an unforgettable “bravery.” To the great sadness of the Pinoys at that point in history even as we don't have to dig into its details.

Too, he had talked about the longer passport validity of ten years, the benefits of it is just taken for granted by most of us. But for those whose eyes are focused on distant shores, like the OFWs, well…

Of course, he revealed no love lost for the Americans and he had several mouthfuls to say on the matter. Even as he had “pivoted” towards China. Which many people see as a little too much.

Too much for comfort, I should say.

Relative to this matter, an international channel on TV reported that the UK had let loose its biggest “warship” the ― particular name has escaped me now ― and into the waters of the South China Sea.

Meaning it’s now on a war footing? Versus China, what else!

And what about the other nations?

Some would say to that: “Susmaryosep! Naa para ba pandemic…”

Let’s regress a little. I saw he had entered the hall with slow steps. But what can we expect from a senior citizen like him? Oh, and there was that offhand “report” that he was rushed to a hospital afterward. Which was, of course, promptly denied by Malacanang.

Now, I don't think this deserves another “susmaryosep.”
