ILIGAN City ― “Love songs last longer/ than lovers ever do…”

These are some lyrics of some love song that somehow for me is kind of disturbing. Though it’s true!

And then I recall some love story about a department head of a bank in Ireland who for a while thought that every aspect of her love life with Paul Hunter was going great. After all, she, Alix Callaghan was tops in her department, of dealing in foreign exchange. She and Paul, a journalist, had met when he had interviewed her, and they had lived together after that, in her pricey condo that overlooked a river.

The going was good for the two of them and that was that; it was all settled.

Little did Alix realize that Paul himself was feeling “unsettled,” hahaha. For he wanted to really settle down, have a family but without her!

Because he had met somebody else. This was in an event while she was busy lecturing some client of the bank about the foreign exchange with him tagging along. There was this house decorator, he said and now he wanted out in their present setup.

What? After everything she did for him, he was leaving her for some lowly house decorator? At least he told her.

He also made it known that he was going back to his house, in a nearby city.

Of course with his newfound gal of a house decorator.

What should Alix do? Indulge in self-pity? Or commit suicide?

Everything was a blur after that, she still functioned though as head of foreign exchange. But it seemed she was doing it by instinct.

She really wanted Paul back, but how? What went wrong with their love then? She had given everything, the penthouse by the river, let him use her car instead of making him use his dilapidated one, bought him branded clothes ― all the works. After all, she was receiving much much more than he did as a journalist in so-so publishing.

But Alix really felt so down that several times she decided to come to his house but couldn't get herself to knock at the door. Afraid that somebody else was there too!

Little did Alix know that somebody worried about her so much ― a Matt Connelly who was impressed with her even with a lackluster lecture she did in which he was among the attendees.

Then they met again ― accidentally in a side street, This time she noticed him. After all, Matt was good-looking too. And talked sense.

They agreed to go to her penthouse, and made love, with the agreement that there would be a “no commitment” agreement between them.

There were several “accidental” meetings after that which ended with a similar “no commitment” agreement. Somehow this had lessened the pain of her losing Paul suddenly.

And then one day Alix was reassigned temporarily in one of the branches in another city… For a few days, Alix felt so down, so unhappy, but suddenly, Matt materialized out of nowhere! This was no accident anymore.

This time, it was a “yes, commitment!”

I don’t know if the two are aware of some lyrics of a song: “Love songs don’t leave you/ but lovers always do…”But what do they care about that too for the moment?”

Happy Valentines everyone!
