By Ben Serrano, Correspondent BUTUAN City — Just a few days after some 16 self-confessed drug users and pushers in Barangay Libertad voluntarily turned themselves in to the barangay officials and police, some P1.2 million worth of suspected shabu were seized in an anti-illegal drugs raid in an adjacent barangay and arrested the alleged pusher of the shabu seized. Through a warrant arrest, police arrested Lauro Mendez, 33, resident of Barangay Doongan, this city on Saturday evening. Confiscated from Men-dez’s possession were 10 sachets of suspected shabu with estimated weight of 102.5 grams which the Dangerous Drug Board valued at P1,209,000. Butuan City Chief of Police Senior Supt. Francisco Dungo identified the other arrested suspect as Jeraian Mendez, 23, who was inside the residence during the Saturday evening raid. Seized from the younger Mendez were three sachets of suspected shabu with total weight of 2.4 grams which Dangerous Drug Board valued at P28,320. The operation was based on a search warrant issued by Judge Eduardo S. Casals of Regional Trial Court-Branch 1, Hall of Justice, Barangay Liber-tad, this city on June 16. Six city police offices in Caraga Region have topped the most number of shabu confiscated from January to June 15, this year. Meanwhile, it is not yet known, however, if the 16 self-confessed drug personalities in Barangay Libertad who turned themselves in whether they would be ordered to undergo drug rehabilitation considering the region only has one government-owned drug rehabilitation facility, and this facility can only serve 100 persons at any given time. Since December last year, there have been 194 persons admitted at the Regional Drug Rehabilitation Center located in Surigao City Last first week of June some 200 suspected drug users and pushers who need immediate rehabilitation turned themselves in at Rosario town, Agusan del Sur, while 77 turned themselves in at Placer, Surigao del Norte.
