THE Supreme Court (SC) confirmed on Tuesday, November 26, that it has received an anonymous complaint seeking the disbarment of Vice President Sara Duterte over her controversial statements regarding the exhumation of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s body.
Lawyer Camille Sue Ting, the SC spokesperson, announced during a press briefing that the complaint was filed earlier this month.
It comes alongside an unresolved disbarment case from 2011, further complicating Duterte’s legal challenges.
“Just this month, the Supreme Court received an anonymous complaint regarding her statements about the late President Marcos,” Ting said, adding that no action has been taken yet by the court.
The controversy stems from Duterte’s October warning to Senator Imee Marcos that she would personally exhume Marcos Sr.’s body and throw it into the West Philippine Sea if political attacks against her continued.
Further uproar followed earlier this month when Duterte claimed she had hired someone to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez, accompanied by profane insults.
These remarks have drawn widespread criticism and renewed calls for Duterte’s disbarment.
Legal experts and critics argue her statements undermine her standing as a lawyer and a public official, sparking debate over potential sanctions.
The SC has yet to announce its next steps regarding the complaint, but the ongoing scrutiny underscores the heightened political and legal tension surrounding the Vice President.
Duterte has not issued a statement addressing either the new complaint or the pending 2011 case.
