A motorcycle driver and his passenger were killed in a vehicular accident in Barangay Cugman on December 26, just a day after Christmas.

Authorities identified the fatalities as Epifanio Dacup, 43, a resident of Barangay Gusa, and his passenger, Mariah Fe Maglasang of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

Initial inquiries by the Cugman Police Station indicate that the motorcycle was run over by a fuel tanker, resulting in fatal injuries for both riders.

The tanker driver, identified as Junel Lumindas, remains in police custody. According to Lumindas, he was unaware of the motorcycle's position until the impact occurred.

“I didn't know where they came from. I only felt something hit the rear wheel,” Lumindas said, expressing remorse over the incident.

Investigators are currently trying to determine the exact circumstances leading to the collision, specifically checking if the motorcycle attempted to overtake the large truck.

Police Master Sgt. Marlon Mabalos confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but noted the severity of the impact.

“The weight of the truck caused the fatal injuries,” Mabalos said.

In light of the tragedy, Mabalos issued a reminder to motorists to exercise extreme caution when sharing the road with heavy equipment.

“Be careful, and don't get too close to big trucks,” he advised.

Lumindas is detained at the Cugman Police Station and may face complaints for multiple homicide pending the final results of the investigation.
