By BEN SERRANO Correspondent BUTUAN City--Police killed a suspect in the rape and murder of two girls in a shootout in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, on Sunday night. Bunawan police chief Senior Insp. Ma. Gemaa Christiana Corbita identified the slain suspect as Welmar Bento Peñaloga, 22, of Purok 6, Springwood Barangay San Teodoro in Bunawan town. Corbita said Peñaloga fought back when police pursued him after being identified by a witness that he was allegedly responsible for the killing of a seven-year old and nine-year old girls. The remains of the girls were found in a shallow grave in Purok 4, Barangay San Teodoro in Bunawan hours before the suspect was killed. Chief Insp. Brian Gonzales Campos said the bodies, already in a state of decomposition, showed neck wounds. Police said Peñaloga was told to give up but he fired shots at officers with a caliber .38 revolver. Police also found a sachet of suspected shabu and a disposable lighter in one of the suspect’s pockets.
