THE game of golf is one addictive sport where one gets to meet, or even walk together for some seven kilometers, and see old and new acquaintances. It is a game where one competes with himself, er, one's handicap.

I used to regularly play this game during my prime at Camp Evangelista and at the Pueblo de Oro golf courses. There were also times when we had to motor to Cawayanon to play at the del Monte golf course and even to the Ranchos Palos Verdes in Davao. But that was years ago.

After I retired from my private employment in 2012, I thought I would be spending more time on the golf course but it was not so. Having dedicated my professional life to my only serious employment, I found it boring to be doing what I thought would keep me occupied.

One year later I tried doing elective public service but fate would not allow me. I lost in my bid for a seat at the city council but I was also allowed to serve in some other way. When Mayor Klarex Uy assumed office in 2022, he allowed me to continue with what I had been doing for the past nine years. Many thanks to him.

During those years I forgot about the game of golf. My Mizuno club set just sat at the corner and the club grips turned brittle probably due to non-use.

Then recently several colleagues in the city government resurrected my interest in the game although I could no longer hit a golf ball like I used to. I lost practically half of the old distance. Age has claimed its natural share. But even then, the game has always been enjoyable and has become more challenging. Add to that the Honma T.World clubs that I now use.

I may not be born to golf and forced to work but the game of golf is one diversion that makes me forget I am now 71 years old.
