By Ben Serrano, Correspondent BUTUAN City — A passenger motorized banca for hire capsized off the coast of Sitio Panumboyon, Barangay Baybay, Surigao City past 11 am on Jan.1, the local Coast Guard reported. In a phone interview, Coast Guard Seaman First Class Reno Pura Espilloro identified the lone fatality as Analyn Edragan, 37, resident of Barangay Gomez, Dinagat town, Province of Dinagat Islands. Espilloro identified boat as MBCA LynLyn 1 owned by couple Wilbert and Gemma Dinggaran. Wilbert is also the boat’s skipper. Espilloro said the boat left the Port of Surigao City past 10 am and about an hour later, while it was sailing towards Dinagat Island there was sudden change from normal winds to strong winds followed sudden rise of waves and strong current that caused the boat to capsize. “All 37 passengers and three crew members including the boat captain who is also the owner were rescued and accounted for except for one passenger who died,” Espilloro said. Espilloro said further investigations by the Coast Guard is now being conducted of the first sea tragedy in Caraga Region on the first day of the new year. Last year before Christmas, two persons died when a passenger vessel capsized also in almost same location due sudden change of strong winds, strong current.
