FOR some, an alcoholic beverage is a must on the table for happy family bonding. For others, it's a thug-fuel leading to a morbid funeral scene.
What started as an ordinary drinking session between a father and his son turned violent on Sunday night in San Isidro, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.
This, after a scuffle ― following an argument inside their shanty ― had prompted the elderly Enerio Hallasgo Jr to ax his son, Marjun, on the head, causing his instantaneous death.
The suspect, who was also wounded on his leg inflicted by a scythe, told the police it was his son who first drew a weapon and hacked him, prompting him to retaliate for “self-defense.”
The incident happened with Enerio’s visually impaired wife Judith around, constantly begging them for peace but to no avail.
“Dili man gud mahimutang akong anak basta makainom alingasa maong gabadlongon sa iyang tatay. Naghilaka pa siya (Marjun) sa ako kay patyon lage daw siya. Kay di man ko makakita, nadungog ko na lang nga nagsumbagay unya napaingon sila sa gawas. Badlongon gyod among anak dali ra siya mahubog sa ilimnon, looy iyang kamatayon,” a grieving mother told a Magnum Radyo reporter.
The Hallasgos are “mandugsanay” of coconut products, which explains the presence of bladed weapons in their surroundings.
PMaj. Marstar Lorenzo, chief of Jasaan Police Station, said the arrested father could face parricide charges for committing the grisly crime.
But the wife said she is confused and undecided.
“Nalooy pud ko sa akong bana kay di man gyod ‘to niya tuyo buhaton. Daghan pa sab ‘mi nabilin nga mga anak naay ga eskwela. Ambot wala ko kabalo unsay akong buhaton,” the poor mother could only say.
