ANOTHER cash-rich chess tournament will enliven Cagayan de Oro this weekend with more than P100,000 in total cash prizes awaiting the winners.
Dubbed as “ASJ-RCM Cagayan de Oro Team Tatluhan and Individual Chess Tournament,” it will be slated at the 2nd level, Event Center of the Limketkai Mall on Saturday and Sunday (June 4 & 5) starting at 9 am.
Ruel Canino (#0935-6748796), who is coordinating the event alongside Johnnel Balquin (#0935-3127614), said a guaranteed P50,000 top purse will be up for grab in the “tatluhan” team competition with the second up to fifth placers out to receive P25,000, P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.
The rest of the top-10 finishers will get P3,000 each.
“Bibo sure na daghan na sab dayo from all over the country ang mo-compete dire karong Sabado ug Domingo. Early registrants sa team will only have entry fee of P2,500, while kadtong sa on site na mo habol P3,000 ilang registration fee,” Canino told Gold Star Daily.
The Individual Rapid offers 7k, 5k, 3k, 2k, and 1k prizes to the top five performers with the entry fees being pegged at P250 for adults and P150 for kiddies.
The ASJ Forex Global and Dr. Ariel Potot-backed chessfest will be played in seven rounds, adopting the Swiss system format.
It has time control of 15 minutes plus a five-second increment in the team events and 10 minutes plus two-second increment in the individual rivalry.
“Very lucky kaayo ang Cagayan de Oro or Mindanao in general nga kauban na nato karon dire si Dr. Ariel Potot who is chairman of the RiChess Movement Inc kay magkadako ang scope sa atong chess development in the grassroots level,” said former overseas chess champion Jaime Joshua Frias II, who is now president of the sports-inclined Green CdeO Eagles Club.
Gold medalists in team events from boards 1, 2, and 3 will be awarded P1,000 each. While special awardees such as the top senior (60 above), top juniors (girls and boys 20-under), and top kiddies (girls and boys 14-under and 10-under) will be given P500 apiece.
