ILIGAN City ― Persons who filed their Certificates of Candidacy for the barangay positions numbered over two thousand here.
This was the statement of Atty. Analiza Barredo, city election officer of the Commission on Elections here to reporters over the weekend. Unlike, of which there were only about a thousand then, she added. Even senior citizens, she added, came over to file, either for barangay chairs or kagawads, she said and there were 700 or so, of them, she said. There was even one who was already 89. She did not say whether it was for the barangay chair or kagawad.
As for the Sangguniang Kabataan, those who filed for such positions also numbered 700 or so. At least, there was one barangay chair, who did not have an opponent, Barredo said, and this is at Tomas Cabili Barangay which is currently held by Cesarve Siacor.
To note, the city has 44 barangays, and the filing was made in batches of 8 or 9 barangays, beginning August 28 until Sept. 2 those who couldn't file on the day their barangay was slated to file, we're aloud to file on Sept. 2, she said and they could withdraw their candidacies on a said date if they had filed earlier, it was learned.
So, they have to work through the night each day of the filing, even though it was past five in the afternoon, she said.
