SINCE taking office in 2022, Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy has helped thousands of couples tie the knot through the city’s free mass wedding program, ‘Kasalan ng Bayan.’
The initiative provides financial relief to low-income couples who cannot afford traditional wedding expenses. According to City Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Sheila Lumbatan, the program has assisted 4,786 couples, with 3,422 weddings held from 2022 to 2023 and 1,344 more planned for 2024 to 2025.
“As families continue to recover from the pandemic’s economic impact, this program ensures that love and commitment are not hindered by financial struggles,” Uy said.
The program has drawn criticism from political opponents, who accuse Uy of using city funds to gain votes in the 2025 elections.
Some even spread claims that a cake supplier was closing due to unpaid bills, but the bakeshop denied the allegations.
City officials clarified that the program operates transparently, with many event expenses covered by the couples’ godparents.
Uy and his son, Barangay Carmen Chair Ranier Joaquin Uy, also personally contribute to the celebrations.
Beyond weddings, the mayor highlighted the city’s broader economic progress.
Cagayan de Oro was recognized with its first-ever Seal of Good Local Governance in 2023 and ranked as the second-richest city outside Metro Manila by per capita GDP in 2024.
Lumbatan pointed out that ‘Kasalan ng Bayan’ is more than a wedding event — it symbolizes hope, unity, and community support, ensuring that love is not limited by financial constraints.
