CAGAYAN de Oro City Health Office opened the NEST (Nurturing Empathic Support and Treatment) Wellness Hub on May 30 during the city’s observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial and Mobilization event.
City Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane, vice chair of the City AIDS Council, said the annual event honors those who have died from HIV and AIDS, raises awareness, encourages testing, and supports people living with HIV (PLHIV).
City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Daba-Dilla emphasized the role of education in reducing stigma and discrimination, noting that greater awareness fosters understanding and acceptance in the community.
Dr. Ronald Romano, physician and clinic manager of the NEST Wellness Hub, expressed gratitude to the local government and the Local AIDS Council for supporting the expansion of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and treatment services.
The Department of Health Region 10 certified the NEST Wellness Hub on April 2 as a primary HIV treatment center, allowing it to offer comprehensive care for individuals living with HIV.
The hub provides medical treatment, counseling, and support services, while also serving as a community resource for HIV prevention education.
City officials pledged their continued support for the wellness hub as part of ongoing efforts to address the HIV epidemic and strengthen health services in the city.
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is observed annually around the world to remember those who have died from HIV and AIDS and to show solidarity with PLHIV.
