THE Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) is urging commuters, drivers and transport operators to support the Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP), which takes effect June 3.
Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy aims to ease worsening traffic congestion through updated and more efficient jeepney routes across the city.
During a news conference May 28, RTA department manager Engr. Nonito Oclarit said traditional jeepneys can continue to operate under the LPTRP, even if they have not joined cooperatives or upgraded to modern units — as long as they follow the new routes.
“This is not just about compliance. It’s about working together for better flow and faster travel time for everyone.,” Oclarit said.
The RTA will monitor both modernized and traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJs) to ensure they follow designated routes and proper fare structures.
Also present at the briefing were Marianne Ulep, financial analyst II of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Northern Mindanao (LTFRB-10), and Ferdinand Flores, public information officer of the Land Transportation Office Northern Mindanao (LTO-10).
Both officials echoed the RTA’s call for cooperation, urging the public to understand and adapt to the changes that will come with the LPTRP.
“This is a shared responsibility. The plan can work, but we all need to adjust,” Ulep said.
The RTA said the LPTRP is part of a broader national initiative to modernize public transport and promote safer, more sustainable mobility.
Authorities hope the plan — by updating routes, reducing overlapping services and promoting route discipline — will bring long-term improvements to the city’s transport system.
As the June 3 implementation approaches, city officials are calling on all sectors to cooperate.
“The road to better transport starts with unity and understanding,” Flores said.
