EXCITING times are ahead for Cagayan de Oro as the city plans to enhance its tourism and celebrate a significant milestone.
During a meeting on February 24, 2025, city officials discussed ways to improve local tourism.
A key focus was Himugso 2025, a grand celebration for Cagayan de Oro’s 75th Founding Anniversary.
Earlier last year, an official from the Department of Tourism in Northern Mindanao (DOT-10) even announced that the city is ready to host "world-class" events.
DOT-10 Director Ellaine Marie Unchuan highlighted the success of the Mindanao Tourism Expo held from April 26-28 as proof of the city’s capability to welcome guests from other regions.
"Secretary Christina Frasco was pleased to see that Cagayan de Oro is ready for 'world-class' events," she shared during a program at city hall.
The expo attracted participants not only from Mindanao but also from the Visayas and Luzon.
Unchuan mentioned that "tourism circuits" were reintroduced during the expo, which could create new opportunities for tourism operators.
This Diamond Celebration will showcase the city’s rich history, culture, and development over the years.
Chief of Staff Sheila B. Lumbatan and City Administrator Atty. Roy Hilario Raagas led the meeting, inviting department managers to share updates and ideas for enhancing the city’s tourism plans.
Acting City Tourism Officer Mark Kenneth Jalapadan provided a comprehensive report on upcoming projects.
Plans include restoring Makahambus Cave and Gorge, known for its historical significance and natural beauty, as well as reopening Kagay-an Resort, a beloved destination for locals and visitors.
Additionally, a welcome marker will be constructed to greet tourists and returning residents.
Lumbatan expressed gratitude to department managers for their dedication to public service, even during challenging times.
She emphasized that with cooperation and clear goals, Cagayan de Oro could become one of the top tourist spots in Mindanao.
