HOPES ran high among many Catholics here for Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle to become the next pope, but residents quickly embraced the historic election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States as Pope Leo XIV, the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
“The decision has been made. Let’s continue to pray for our Church and our new leader,” one local resident shared on social media, reflecting the city’s overall acceptance and support following Thursday’s announcement.
The news stirred emotional responses across Cagayan de Oro, where Catholicism is deeply woven into daily life.
“Good news! We now have a new Holy Father at the Vatican. Praise the Lord!” said Veronica, a university teacher.
Tatay Oscar, an elder in the community, added: “Thank you, Lord, for the new pope. Long live the Holy Father!”
White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney earlier Thursday, signaling to the world that a new pope had been chosen after several days of prayer and deliberation. Jubilant crowds filled St. Peter’s Square as the traditional declaration rang out: “Habemus Papam!” (“We have a pope!”).
The College of Cardinals announced, “Our new pope is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. He will be called Pope Leo the Fourteenth.”
Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who was widely known for advancing interfaith dialogue, advocating for environmental stewardship, and confronting issues of abuse within the Church. Prevost’s election comes during a period of reflection and transition for global Catholic leadership.
Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost is a member of the Order of St. Augustine. He previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and most recently led the Vatican office responsible for appointing bishops.
Admired for his compassionate leadership and firm faith, Pope Leo XIV is seen by many as a bridge between the Americas and the Vatican.
In his first public address, he called for unity and humility: “Let us walk together as one Church, guided by love and truth. From the New World to the Eternal City, may our faith be a light for all.”
The new pontiff chose the name “Leo” in honor of Pope Leo XIII, a 19th-century leader known for championing workers’ rights and social justice. The name reflects a commitment to addressing the moral and social challenges of today’s world.
Pope Leo XIV is expected to focus on global outreach, social justice, and spiritual renewal as he begins his papacy.
