CANDIDATES, election watchdogs, and various stakeholders pledged their commitment to a fair and peaceful electoral process during a Unity Walk, Interfaith Rally, and Peace Covenant Signing organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) today, March 26.
The event, held in preparation for the May 12 midterm elections, began at 6 am at Rodelsa Circle, Rotonda, and concluded at the Amphitheater in Divisoria.
Among the first to sign the peace covenant were 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan and Barangay Chairman Raineir Joaquin ‘Kapkik’ Uy, along with councilor candidates from both districts. Their participation underscored a commitment to ethical campaigning.
Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy also joined the event, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and voter awareness. His main rival, former Mayor Oscar Moreno, attended, though Moreno’s running mate, vice mayoral candidate Zaldy Ocon, was absent.
Comelec’s 1st and 2nd District Election Officers, Atty. Joel Dexter C. Nagtalon and Atty. Ramil P. Acol, pointed out the need for honest campaigning and invited the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) to help ensure transparency.
Religious leaders, including Archbishop Jose Cabantan, offered prayers for unity and a peaceful election.
“We hope this year’s elections will be clean, fair, and free from violence,” Cabantan said.
Candidates from various political parties took an Integrity Pledge, committing to ethical standards and respecting election results.
Mayoral candidate Jose Gabriele ‘Pompee’ La Viña spoke about the need for city reforms, while Suan urged candidates to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than negative tactics.
Independent mayoral candidate Vicente Flores expressed confidence in his campaign despite facing seasoned politicians.
Incumbent Vice Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez remained optimistic, saying, “For the win mi, tanan modaog.”
Several prominent figures, including 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and Morales ‘Bebs’ Besavilla, also signed the peace covenant.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of civic participation and maintaining a peaceful democratic process in Cagayan de Oro City.
