THE Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (Opapru) is setting its sights on an ambitious goal for 2025: the establishment of a Department of Peace (DoP).
In a statement released over the weekend, Opapru announced that alongside preparations for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm) elections, it is consulting stakeholders on the creation of the DoP.
Secretary Carlito G. Galvez Jr. highlighted the agency's vision to institutionalize the Philippines’ peace policies, programs, and strategies under the DoP.
“We aim to transform Opapru into a national peace institute, ensuring that all peace initiatives are sustainable and aligned under one department,” Galvez said.
The localization of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (NAPWPS) is also a priority. The NAPWPS aligns with international mandates and promotes gender equality in peace and development efforts across the country.
Galvez expressed optimism, citing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s strong support for the ongoing peace process. Speaking at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum last week, he underscored the administration’s commitment to fulfilling peace agreements and sustaining progress in conflict-affected areas.
“This year has been a very successful one for our agency and the Philippine peace process as a whole,” Galvez said.
As part of its development initiatives, Opapru recently distributed P25 million worth of farming equipment to members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) to boost agricultural productivity and incomes. The equipment distribution took place earlier this month.
Galvez also reported significant progress in transformation programs for former rebels, their families, and communities.
Thirty-four out of 51 provincial local government units have already crafted their respective transformation plans to integrate these individuals into society.
Opapru remains committed to addressing the challenges ahead, ensuring a lasting peace for the nation.
