UNLIKE other cities in the Philippines, Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental did not hold any wreath-laying ceremonies for National Heroes’ Day today, August 25.

NO HEROES DAY HERE. While other cities in the Philippines marked National Heroes’ Day today, August 25 with wreath-laying ceremonies, no such events were held in Cagayan de Oro or Misamis Oriental.

Local reporters, who anticipated covering the annual event at Plaza Divisoria where monuments of national heroes like Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio stand, found no activity.

The only sign of the holiday was a flower delivery to the monuments around 7 am.

According to Jade Adecer, the city’s information officer, the El Pueblo Asus Heroes park is currently under renovation.

“That is why instead sa diha mag raise sa flag didto ta ga display sa Philippine flag infront [sic] sa atong city hall,” Adecer said in a comment on a post by RMN-dxCC.

He added, “Si Dr. Jose Rizal nga monument is ga wreath-laying ta diha every December 30. Lahi man atong monument for the National Heroes, of which under renovation karon ang monument.”

In Misamis Oriental, Provincial Information Officer Joane Tabique said the province only celebrates Independence Day and Rizal Day.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the National Heroes’ Day commemoration at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
