THE pandemic has had a significant impact on the LGBTQIA+ Community. In Mindanao, many LGBTQIA+ individuals are at risk of homelessness and employment insecurity. And are suffering from deteriorating mental health because of the community quarantine.
People living with HIV had serious challenges in accessing treatment. Challenged by the Coronavirus, LGBTQIA+ organizations were the first responders in their immediate communities in providing emergency food assistance, temporary shelter, counseling, and free HIV services.
Mindanao Pride – a diverse group of gender equality advocates, allies, and human rights activists, convened LGBTQIA+ organizations in Mindanao to collaborate and raise funds for their Covid-19 response efforts.
Together with four other LGBTQIA+ organizations, Mindanao Pride celebrates Pride Month 2020 through an online fundraising concert entitled “Mindanao Pride LIVE.” The concert will stream live from the Mindanao Pride Facebook page tomorrow at 8:00 pm.
Some notable guest performers are 3rd Place Idol Philippines (Season 1), Lance Busa; internet sensation trio, Digos Good Vibes; Lady Gaga Filipino Impersonator, Lady Gagita; Transwoman Idol Philippines Contestant (Season 1) Jeremiah “Ming” Torayno and Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 1 Grand Finalist, Maricel Callo.
Equality champion, Dinagat Islands Gov. Kaka J. Bag-ao and Miss Universe 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach will also appear live as special guests of the online event.
The organization also puts forward that apart from activism on social issues, assistance is of prime importance to be given focus, too, especially now that the country is facing a crisis.
“For us [Mindanao Pride], Pride is also an opportunity to show solidarity to those who are heavily affected by Covid-19,” says Hamilcar Chanjueco Jr., Founder of Mindanao Pride.
“Not even a pandemic can stop the community in celebrating Pride.”
