A proposed ordinance to ban parking around the public market is under consideration in the eastern Misamis Oriental town of Medina.
The measure aims to ease traffic congestion in the town’s business center.
Grocery store owner Evangeline Zamora said the ordinance would benefit businesses by making roads in front of their stores more accessible to customers.
Municipal Councilor Ismael Naguib, who chairs the Committee on Police, Public Safety and Order, authored the proposal. He said it is necessary due to the increasing number of vehicles in Medina.
However, Naguib said the ordinance needs careful study to ensure it does not negatively impact businesses that rely on deliveries of goods like rice and construction materials.
Roy Corro, another local merchant, supports the ordinance and suggested designating specific loading and unloading zones around the market.
He also recommended using the ordinance to educate drivers of public transport vehicles about proper passenger pickup locations.
Naguib said he plans to include a designated parking area for light delivery trucks and vans in the proposed ordinance.
He added that the council will also study whether large delivery vehicles, such as wing vans, will be permitted to park near establishments in the no-parking zones for unloading.
