CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Region 10 has reminded public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers not to demand additional fares amid rising fuel costs, stressing that any increase must be strictly voluntary.

The advisory was issued during the Talakayan sa PIA on March 30, following reports that some jeepney drivers have posted notices inside their vehicles asking passengers to add to their fare.

Regional Director Alexes Joseph Bendijo clarified that while drivers may appeal for understanding, they are prohibited from imposing or requiring higher fares.

“Magpaka-buta bungol na lang ko ana… basta ayaw lang mo pamugos. Ayaw pugsa inyong pasahero nga maningil mog dugang plete,” Bendijo said, referring to notices requesting voluntary fare add-ons.

He emphasized that voluntary contributions are allowed, but any form of coercion is a violation of existing regulations.

Drivers, however, say the impact of rising fuel prices is already taking a toll. Carmen-based jeepney driver John Abejay said he is considering posting a similar notice as earnings barely cover fuel costs.

“Magbutang ra gyud ko ana ma’am. Lisod na gyud kaayo—udto na pero akong kita igo ra sa gasolina. Kapoy kaayo, init pa gyud kaayo ang panahon,” he said.

Some passengers expressed willingness to help. Kathryn Montejo, a mall saleslady, said even small voluntary contributions can ease drivers’ burden.

“Kung ako, ok ra gyud kaayo magdugang kog plete voluntarily. Piso o singko lang, dako na na nga tabang,” she said.

But others said they simply cannot afford to pay more. Glenda Abejo, a part-time hairdresser from Barangay Balubal, said she will continue paying the regular fare.

“Akong plete igo ra gyud. Naglisod pud ko, lisod kaayo ang panahon,” she said.

Meanwhile, global oil price movements are expected to further strain both drivers and commuters. A report by ABS-CBN News said diesel prices may rise by ₱18 to ₱20 per liter, gasoline by ₱4 to ₱6, and kerosene by ₱9 to ₱11 as of April 6.
