BUTUAN CITY — After a shooting death of a town councilor candidate in Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte on Monday last week, a Liberal Party coordinator in another Surigao del Norte town was shot dead at a beachfront in Barangay Poblacion, Bacuag, Surigao del Norte.

In a phone interview, Orquina claimed the victim was at his beach property when unidentified gunman shot his unarmed caretaker and political coordinator in the torso, shoulder and back portion.
“It was some sort of a miracle that he survived that very moment he was shot by the lone assassin armed with .45 cal pistol but we believed (the suspect had) back-ups. Thus responders brought him to Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City which is nearly two hours by land travel away from here Bacuag,” Orquina told the Gold Star Daily.
“He managed to survive for three days while undergoing treatment at Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City until he succumbed to death yesterday (Friday)” Orquina added.
“This violent incident is first time that a Bacuaganon was killed because of maybe partisan politics. For many years we are all peaceful here especially during election time. My father who served for three full terms as Bacuag mayor and my brother as mayor for one term, no violence happened like this now. I appeal to everybody especially those politicians who are not from Bacuag to help us achieve peaceful and clean elections by May 9 which is few months from now. It is not our political group who will be at loss here, it is our community and people,” Orquina said.
Macaraeg, for his part, claimed Bacuag Police is still investigating the Silagan killing and whether the killing was electionelated or not.
It can be recalled that a matter of one day only, retired police officer and former councilor who was seeking his position in the May elections was shot dead by two motorcycleiding men in Placer, Surigao del Norte on Monday, last week.
