LAPOK Elementary School, under the guidance of Head Teacher Johnmark Oligario, has taken significant steps to honor and celebrate the National IP Month.
Following the guidelines set forth by the Department of Education (DepEd) in DepEd Order No. 62 and DepEd Order No. 32, the school aims to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate education to indigenous children, youth, and adults.
Recognizing the importance of preserving the cultural identity of indigenous peoples, Lapok Elementary School emphasizes the use of mother-tongue languages in instruction.
"This approach ensures that education does not seek to assimilate indigenous communities but rather respects and values their unique heritage," said Oligario.
To kick off the National IP Month celebration, a ritual was performed at the school, led by respected tribal chieftain Datu Ananayon William Enecito and Bae Taiwan Tawan Susan Hugnaan.
The ceremony aimed to invoke blessings and guidance from divine spirits, setting a reverent tone for the month-long festivities, according to Oligario.
In line with the theme of IP Education, Lapok Elementary School organized a symposium on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP).
The event, which involved all learners, provided a platform to discuss and honor the traditional wisdom and customs of indigenous communities.
Notable guests, including Baylan Crispin Ondak, shared their expertise and insights on IP education.
The foundation of IP Education lies in Republic Act 8371, also known as the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act.
This legislation aims to recognize, protect, and promote the rights of indigenous cultural communities and indigenous peoples.
It establishes mechanisms, such as the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, to ensure the implementation of these rights and allocate necessary funds.
By actively engaging in the celebration of National IP Month and implementing IP Education initiatives, Lapok Elementary School demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity and cultural preservation.
