JR Borja General Hospital is set to expand its intensive care unit (ICU) and establish its first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu), marking a major step forward in public healthcare for the city.
Acting Chief of Hospital Dr. Michael June Perez shared the update on Inyong Alagad with Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy.
Mayor Uy emphasized that the expansion aligns with the city’s Rise Development Framework, aimed at enhancing healthcare services for families.
The ICU will expand from eight to 25 beds, allowing the hospital to treat more critically ill patients.
The Nicu will provide specialized care for premature and sick newborns, reducing the burden on Northern Mindanao Medical Center.
Preparations for the ICU expansion are nearly complete, with construction set to begin soon, Dr. Perez confirmed.
He also acknowledged the community’s role in supporting hospital efforts, particularly in ensuring access to essential medications.
Currently, JRBGH has 175 beds, a Level III laboratory and radiology facility, five Type B ambulances, and 27 operational hemodialysis machines. Due to increasing demand, its outpatient department has extended operating hours until 10:00 pm.
Beyond medical care, the hospital provides social services, assisting 15,000 families in crisis, 6,000 senior citizens, 3,000 persons with disabilities, and 5,000 solo parents.
Its Early Child Care and Development program benefits 10,000 children, with six new centers recently opened.
Dr. Perez said the ICU expansion and Nicu introduction reinforce JR Borja General Hospital’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare for both adults and newborns.
