THE very first Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Dancesport Competition with a cause was successfully held on June 4, at the City Tourism Hall, showcasing not only the talents of the city’s youth but also raising support for a noble cause.
The event gathered youth participants from various schools, barangays, and communities, competing in multiple categories including Solo, Duo, Couple’s 3-dance, and Couple’s 5-dance events. Competitors ranged from juvenile to junior and third-kind divisions, demonstrating remarkable skill and passion for the sport.
More than a display of talent, the competition carried a meaningful purpose: the proceeds will benefit the Home Care for Girls program under the City Social Welfare and Development Department, a shelter dedicated to caring for abandoned minor girls.
Organizers emphasized that supporting this vulnerable group aligns with the community’s broader commitment to youth empowerment and social welfare.
“This event is not just about competition; it’s about harnessing the energy and skills of our youth to make a difference in the lives of others,” said a representative from the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Cagayan de Oro.
The SK Dancesport Competition was a collaborative effort involving the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Cagayan de Oro, the Cagayan de Oro City Dance Teachers Organization, the Oro Youth Development Office, the City Sports Commission, and the Department of Interior and Local Government – Cagayan de Oro.
Their joint goal is to promote Dancesport as a major sports development program within the city, particularly encouraging participation among out-of-school youth.
By integrating social responsibility with sports, the competition hopes to inspire young people to develop their talents while contributing to community development.
Organizers also intend to send promising dancers to future regional and national dancesport competitions, providing them with opportunities to grow and excel.
This inaugural event sets a precedent for future SK initiatives that combine sports, talent development, and community service, reinforcing the vital role of youth in shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society.
