IN the hunt for a second conference title, the Iloilo Kisela Knights crushed the Davao Chess Wizards, 14.5-6.5 in the resumption of their interrupted January 26 match on Monday to regain the top spot in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines Southern Division.
The Ilonggos, fronted by 13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio, Jr, now have a 7-1 win-loss ledger as they relegated the Davawenyos to second place at 7-2.
The returning Zamboanga Sultans, in the continuation of their aborted rapid play with Palawan, came up victorious, 17-4 to share third place with the Negros Kingsmen at 6-3.
Toledo and Surigao shared at fourth with a 5-4 record after the former triumphed in their rescheduled rapid duel, 11.5-9.5.
“Sayang, we’re not in full force in our face-off with Toledo. Nahurot gyod pud ‘mi sa Mindanao rivals kay pildi ‘mi sa Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Zamboanga,” said Surigao team owner Honorary National Master Rey Urbiztondo.
Cagayan de Oro, however, dropped to 4-5 win-loss card in the company of Camarines after yielding to Tacloban, 6-15 in their own rapid showdown.
The CMOCA Higalas also lost two in a row on Saturday against Iloilo and Negros.
