By Nora Soriño Iligan City Bureau Chief . Iligan City — The Philippine National Police here has enjoined residents to be on alert and report any suspicious characters seen going about in the city. Police City Director, Senior Supt. Leony Roy Ga said this is “very necessary” in the wake of what is currently happening in Tubaran, Lanao del Sur. To recall, some 500 families fled as Maute Group fighters clashed with government forces last Sunday. This group is now led by Humam Abdul Romato Najid a.k.a. Abu Dar. This is the same group but now with a new leader which had their stronghold in Butig, a municipality near Tubaran. Later, the clashes moved nearer and nearer to this city as the war moved to Marawi last year, which is only 37 kilometers away from this city. Authorities posited that the next target is this city and will move on to Cagayan de Oro City, if they are successful in establishing a “caliphate” in Lanao del Sur. For his part, Col. Romeo Brawner of the Joint Task Force Ranao assured that the clashes in Tubaran will not last long since the military “is ready” for any eventuality.
