ILIGAN City is ramping up its police presence with additional forces brought in from neighboring areas to ensure safety during its month-long fiesta and tourism celebration, a police spokesperson said over the weekend.
Police Maj. Zandrex Panolong, representing the Iligan City Police under Police Co. Reinante Delos Santos, said the need for “augmentation forces” is due to the extended celebrations.
Officers from nearby Cagayan de Oro City and Lanao del Norte will bolster local law enforcement during the festivities, which began on September 1 and continue until October 5.
“The presence of additional officers is crucial, especially for major events like the ‘Pagpakanaug’ on September 20 and the ‘Kasadya Street Dancing’ and parades,” Panolong said.
The feast of St. Michael the Archangel, the city’s patron saint, is a key highlight, with ceremonies such as the lowering of the saint’s image drawing large crowds.
With thousands of devotees expected, Panolong pointed out that crowd control will be a top priority.
The police will manage public order during the frenzied religious processions, with force multipliers like the Barangay Public Action Team providing additional support.
To ensure safety, strict measures will be enforced, including bans on hats, jackets, and backpacks at key events.
Mobile signals may be cut, and closed-circuit televisions have been installed in strategic locations.
While Iligan’s law enforcement is focusing on local festivities, Panolong clarified that the city is not involved in the operations related to Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s arrest in Davao City.
Mayor Frederick Siao and Vice Mayor Marianito Alemania are leading the celebrations, which include cultural performances, parades, and the Miss Iligan Universe pageant. The city’s officials hope the event will boost tourism and local pride.
