I just realized that when I was 36 years old, a local daily newspaper was born in Cagayan de Oro, in Mindanao practically, where most of the printed news media came out either weekly or bi-weekly. And I did not realize that after several more years, I would become a part of this medium of disseminating valuable information through its opinion pages.
Writing has been one of my better ways of communicating because I did not have the courage to speak my mind during my schooling years. I practically started coming out of my shell when I started charting my future in the XU College of Law.
GSD became a part of my professional life when I became the Office Services and PR Manager of my only serious private employment. Aside from meeting with mostly local media practitioners, I had to regularly listen to and read the local news. Yes, GSD was an excellent source of current events, public opinion, and community affairs.
Thanks to the immediate past editor-in-chief of GSD, spectacled Herbie Gomez, for finding a place for my materials on the opinion page. Herbie, and of course his better half, Tess, and I used to be actively involved in what is now the multi-awarded Rotary Club of CdeO CenterPoint.
When Herbie recently joined Rappler, he left the reins of the GSD to his equally capable second-in-command, the heavily-bearded Cong Corrales. Cong and I were erstwhile officers of the XU College of Agriculture parents association. Our sons both finished their bachelor's education in the same year in that school.
No, my association with both Herbie and Cong was not the reason my materials see print in the GSD. Rather, my materials probably speak for themselves (wink wink).
That's how the GSD has become a part of my life story.
