THE Mindanao Gold Star Daily is marking this year, beginning July 1 as its 33rd year.
Little did we know that this paper with humble beginnings under Ernesto ‘Toto’ Chu, the president, would reach this far, at 33 and still counting at that!
Ruchelle Bangis, the general manager, yesterday said that July 1 was just marked with simple rites, prayers and some get together with mostly personnel from the head office at Cagayan de Oro. Some avid patrons and some people from the bureau if they happened to be around.
And after that, it was “back to work and business as usual.”
To note, over the span of more than 30 years, Mindanao Gold Star Daily has impacted even in its simple way the lives of people in Mindanao and even elsewhere in the country as evidenced by reactions, even actions, and commentators from as far as Cebu City and Manila. (At least two readers from Cebu City took the trouble of giving this writer some documents to shed further clarification on some projects in this city which I have written about and one student from the University of Sto. Toma's in Manila came over to this bureau to interview this writer.)
Ably propelled, too, by Editor-in-Chief Leonardo Vicente ‘Cong’ Corrales, his predecessor Herbie Gomez is now with Rappler, and the latter media outlet is on a ‘collision course’ against the government because of some impactful news, probably.
It is a fact then, that Ernesto ‘Toto’ Chu together with his wife Guadalupe ‘Bebotte’ Chu revolutionized community journalism in this part of the country.
