Foodpanda, the on-demand food delivery service in the Philippines, makes it easy Cagayan De Oro residents to satisfy Filipino food cravings with these three restaurant partners: BagongLipunan Restaurant, Dear Manok, and Tita Lili’s Eatery. Here are their stories on how to make it in the food business.
BagongLipunan Restaurant
Best known for their homemade noodles and Chinese-Filipino dishes with no preservatives, BagongLipunan Restaurant has become a filipino family favorite in Cagayan De Oro City. Back in the 1970s, before the restaurant came to be, Ms. DioscoraPeligrino and her husband, Mr. Ong He Kiam, were working as a waitress and a cook in Mercury Restaurant which was owned by Mr. Ong’s sister. After some time, they acquired the restaurant and changed the name to BagongLipunan Restaurant.

According to Ms. Peligrino, the best part about work is dealing with different people on a day-to-day basis. Their regular customers are from different generations which gives them a very fulfilling experience because they were able to see their regulars’ love for BagongLipunan’s food passed on to another generation.
When asked about her advice to aspiring restaurant owners: “You should learn to love and make your craft better. Think long-term when starting a restaurant and know your market. Most importantly,be patient with customers and your employees. You may experience hardships and it may take time to get your restaurant to click, but as long as you have perseverance and a vision, your restaurant will be firmly rooted. In the near future, we would love to see BagongLipunan expand outside the city.”
Dear Manok
Dear Manok started in 1997 as a tiny barbecue stall by the road, and slowly became one of the top grilled chicken restaurants in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, and Butuan. For 22 years, it has been winning the hearts and taste buds of Filipinos with its “one-of-a-kind” Grilled Chicken, delicious Pancit Canton, and refreshing Buko Shake. Over the years, Dear Manok continues to grow by putting quality service and delicious Filipino comfort food at the center of its business.

“Taking care of your people has to be the most important advice I can give to any restaurant owner — that means both customers and employees. People are the lifeblood of a food business and without them, no business would ever survive. Here in Dear Manok, we always believe in doing better by working together,” said Ms. Emily Goyeneche, restaurant manager.
“I believe I speak for a lot of restaurants when I say that managing a food business will always have its share of challenges and struggles. Nevertheless, all the stress is worth it when you see customers smiling and genuinely enjoying our food,” she also added. Dear Manok is planning to expand its business nationwide in order to bring their beloved recipes to new places and become the leading chicken barbecue joint in the country.
Tita Lili’s Eatery
Two years ago, entrepreneur Ms. Jasmine Lili Kho started Tita Lili’s Eatery with just six different dishes and now they have a variety of filipino dishes to choose from. Ms. Kho shared that she experienced a lot of ups and downs in handling the business, especially in the beginning, but she also learned a lot along the way thanks to her customers’ feedback.

“I think the most important aspect of being an entrepreneur, aside from having determination, perseverance, and hardwork, is learning to accept your shortcomings as well. I have always enjoyed interacting and talking to people. It is such a heartwarming experience knowing they appreciate our food and service that is why we are planning to expand our business. We want to cater to more customers in Cagayan De Oro city.
Apart from foodpanda’s quick and convenient delivery process, Ms. Peligrino, Ms. Goyeneche, and Ms Kho all shared how the platform provided them the ability to expand their businesses online. They are happy to be able to serve more customers in areas that normally they cannot cater due to distance.
