ILIGAN City ― A deadly shooting at the Night Market in the city’s public plaza sent crowds fleeing on Sunday evening, heightening public concerns over safety in the popular weekend event space.
The Philippine National Police spokesperson, Major Zandrex Panolong, told reporters on Monday that CCTV footage captured the suspect at the scene in Barangay Poblacion, where the market is held each weekend.
He emphasized that the incident was “isolated,” identifying it as a case of “rido” — a clan war originating from the municipality of Tubaran in Lanao del Sur.
In the aftermath, social media buzzed with expressions of fear and worry, with some commenters questioning the city’s safety.
Major Panolong noted, however, that the victim’s family does not plan to file charges against the suspects involved.
The Night Market, established two years ago by Mayor Frederick W. Siao’s administration, has become a regular weekend attraction where residents gather for food, shopping, and social activities on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.
