THE environmental watchdog group EcoWaste Coalition called on all candidates for the 2025 national and local elections to place public health and environmental protection at the core of their campaigns.
With over 500,000 aspirants expected to file certificates of candidacy (COCs) between October 1-8 for more than 18,000 positions, the group stressed the need for sustainable practices.
“We urge candidates to demonstrate their commitment to the environment by incorporating ecological issues into their platforms and ensuring campaigns are resource-efficient and waste-free,” said EcoWaste National Coordinator Aileen Lucero.
The group urged candidates to avoid “garpol” — a term combining garbage and politician — referring to those who waste resources and harm the environment.
EcoWaste encouraged candidates to conduct litter-free COC filings and campaign responsibly by reducing plastic use and avoiding hazardous materials.
The call comes amid heightened environmental challenges, including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. EcoWaste emphasized the need for candidates to lead post-election clean-up efforts, regardless of election outcomes.
The 2025 elections will fill 18,000 posts, including 12 Senate seats, 254 House positions, 82 gubernatorial roles, and various local government positions.
