By BEN SERRANO Correspondent BUTUAN City--The Department of Health (DOH) is done with its initial investigation into the Dec. 17, 2016 death of an infant that the mother alleged to be the fault of the governmentun Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City. Romilyn Torralba, DOH information officer for Caraga, said results of the initial investigation were already done, and copies were even sent to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). Torralba however asked this paper to write to the CRH and request for a copy from the hospital itself based on the advice of the DOH regional director. The DOH looked into the death of seven-month old Mary Rose Lolo last Dec. 17 after her mother Marilou complained about the alleged shabby treatment of the infant at the emergency room of Surigao hospital. Marilou said her daughter was rushed to the hospital by her sister at around 5 pm Dec. 17 after the baby was observed to be suffering from loose bowel movements. She said that in the emergency room, her sister  was told to replace drinking water with mineral water, and to wait for a doctor to come. Marilou said that when she arrived in the hospital at around 7 pm, she noticed that her daughter’s eyes have darkened and she continued to defecate, prompting her to ask the ER staff to call a doctor. She said a doctor came and pointed out that the child was already having difficulties in breathing. She said the doctor merely replied: “Missis, you are not the only one with a patient here. Wait.” Desperate, Marilou said she called the attention of hospital staff members and asked for help. She said she was already about to move her child to another hospital but nurses came to give her daughter dextrose. The nurses, she said, had difficulties with the needle. Marilou said it took the doctor between 10 pm and 11 pm to attend to her child who was already in critical condition. She said by the time the doctor came to attend to her ailing daughter, it was already too late. On her Facebook account, Marilou expressed her dismay and blamed the hospital for her child’s death. DOH assistant director for Caraga Cesar Cassion said officials of CRH and the DOH regional office were looking into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death. Cassion however said that, initially, CRH officials denied Marilou’s allegations that the baby was not treated well in the emergency room.
