Deped denies viral claim on adding Grade 13

THE Department of Education (Deped) has denied a viral Facebook post that falsely claims Grade 13 will be added to the Senior High School curriculum starting in School Year 2025–2026.

The post, shared by a page called “Educational News,” used the official logos of both DepEd and the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to support the false claim.

Deped clarified that the information is completely untrue and misleading.

In an official statement, Deped’s regional office in Northern Mindanao emphasized that there are no plans to introduce a Grade 13 in the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The department reiterated that any updates on curriculum changes will be announced only through its verified channels, including its official Facebook page and website.

Students, parents and educators were urged to be cautious about sharing or believing unverified information circulating on social media.

Ched also confirmed it has not issued any statements supporting the addition of Grade 13. The agency emphasized that the viral post is fabricated and has no basis in official policy.

Both Deped and Ched reaffirmed their commitment to providing accurate information and combating disinformation that causes confusion among students and the public.

Local education officials expressed concern over the impact of fake news on the sector.

Samuel Macagba III, assistant principal for formation at Xavier University Junior High School, said any decision to add a new grade level must be carefully studied and consulted with stakeholders. He stressed that changes should be evidence-based and aligned with the findings of the Education Commission (Edcom).

Macagba also underscored the ongoing threat of disinformation, especially in education. He called for improved media literacy and encouraged the public to verify information through official sources.

“Fake news can cause panic and confusion, which can disrupt students’ preparations and trust in the education system,” he said.

Deped urged the public to report misleading posts and to follow only its verified Facebook page and official website for accurate updates.

The department also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and responsible communication, noting that any major changes to the curriculum will be clearly announced to all stakeholders.
