THE Night Market Management Committee (NMMC) announced plans to reopen Osmeña Street leading to Ramon-Chavez in the Cogon Market area to ease traffic congestion caused by street vendors.
“Traffic congestion has become a major concern. Reopening these streets will help improve movement in the area,” NMMC head Atty. Jose Edgardo Uy said.
The move has sparked concerns among stallholders on the second floor of Cogon Market, who pay rent and business permits.
They argue that sidewalk vendors selling similar goods at street level without the same fees undercut their sales.
Uy emphasized the need for fair regulations to balance the interests of both sidewalk vendors and formal businesses.
He assured that vendors displaced from Osmeña Street and Ramon-Chavez would be relocated to alternative areas without losing their livelihoods.
Reopening the streets will also improve emergency response, allowing fire trucks and ambulances to pass through the market freely.
The NMMC aims to maintain order in commercial areas, ensuring accessibility while supporting all businesses.
