Rainy season not expected till first or second week of June

EL SALVADOR CITY — Residents of Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon should prepare for more frequent afternoon thunderstorms as Mindanao enters the transition period between the dry and rainy seasons. According to Luz Mercado, weather specialist at the PAGASA El Salvador station, the official onset of the rainy season is not expected until the first or second week of June. While easterly winds currently prevail, "localized thunderstorms" will continue to bring scattered rain showers and cloudy skies across the region. However, weather officials warn farmers that these rains remain unpredictable and short-lived. PAGASA will only declare the start of the rainy season once the southwest monsoon takes over, characterized by five consecutive days of significant rainfall.

Avail of free vaccines vs cervical cancer: DOH to women

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — In observance of Cervical Cancer Consciousness Month, health officials in Northern Mindanao are calling for a proactive stance against the human papillomavirus (HPV). DOH Regional Director Nimfa Torrizo announced that free vaccination services are now available for girls aged nine to 13 to provide lifetime immunity and support the government’s "zero cervical cancer" goal. Experts from the DOH and Maria Reyna-Xavier University Hospital emphasize that while cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Filipino women, it is highly preventable through early vaccination and regular screenings. As Dr. Cecilia Llave of Cecap notes, a healthy lifestyle begins with early detection—making these free government vaccines a vital resource for families across the region.
