ILIGAN City ― Every once in a while, we hear of some Pinoys dreaming of that "great" American dream. Even my good friend Fely says that she hears about it too from time to time. Whereby some of us in this country still think of coming to America. As I understand it, it is a "land flowing with milk and honey." So, who wouldn't want to partake of that? Especially in these troubled times of ours, these days in our country,
But are we the only country that is troubled these days? Of course, there are many too. Maybe, even America. That I began to think when I saw recently the debate of two creatures in that land casting moist eyes towards the position of President
I am talking about Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Both have the "family names" of the President. Their first names are "former" and "Vice" respectively. Their debate was last September 10, we are told.
So, there I was in a living room, seeing them on YouTube. Trump and Harris. Who else. They had that standard handshake at the outset, to signify sportsmanship?
Then they were taken by the "referee" or "moderator" to navigate the subjects among other things, inflation, abortion, immigration, and other "…tions" These three were for me, relatable and understandable. Like, Harris said that a product of "incest" wasn't welcome into this world. Thus, a woman should be the one to make decisions regarding her body.
I understood that in some cases, she is in favor of abortion.
Which Trump did not quite agree with. And then he talked too that "inflation" in the watch of incumbent Joe Biden is "very high." And are they doing enough for the other problems that America has now? Like, for instance, immigration?
Harris said that when Trump had left the White House, the country "was in so much mess.:" That so much cleaning up has to be made. Or words to that effect.
Yet Trump had become combative. Although the other too looked just as combative and said that in Springfield, Ohio where there were many Haitian immigrants, people there had many of their pets stolen. And then, the pets from many houses were "eaten." Like their dogs. Or their cats. Oh, my, this is getting weirder, implying that if that happened there in Ohio, these could happen to other places in the US of A?
My, my, I thought. Meaning, there's no more milk and honey there?
Rob Rue, a mayor there in that mentioned place voiced his dismay over the debate. Because Trump's claims weren't even validated if that was happening over there.
Now, I remember that 2020 presidential battle between Trump and Joe Biden. In which on Jan. 6, 2021, there was a riot. Or, was it a revolution? In which the incumbents there had to do some hiding inside the White House even as there were shouts of: "Hang Mike Pence! Hang Mike Pence!" That reverberated not only there but throughout the rest of the world.!
It was indeed learned that there was a "hanger" for Mike Pence. For the world to see. And I think this wasn't deep fake.
Although, I sometimes think that Joe Biden's sickness of Covid might be some "palusot." For his backing out of his candidacy. As what my nerdy friend Mike said. Because the trendy sickness these days is now MPox. Compliments, they say, of some conspiracy theorists of the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet or even Elon Musk. Who they say makes 'huge" contributions to the World Health Organization and thus, their take on this Covid thing. Or M-pox. Well, who knows?
Yet, my thinking on this "great American dream," is that it is becoming a nightmare. Or, worse, it has become not a dream, but a nightmare.
