ILIGAN City ― In 2016 during the night after the national elections held earlier on that day, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr was interviewed on national TV. He was smiling from ear to ear. After all, the position of vice president of this country was all ready for the taking. In the bag! So they say.

But alas! When morning came, his grin became a sigh: The VP position was not his.

It was for a wisp of a woman called Leni Robredo! Why, oh why? What happened ― was there something “fishy” happening during the night when the hours had crept through the darkness? Ah.

I didn’t see Leni grin from ear to ear though.

But she did become the VP until now, to the disappointment of FM, Jr who if I’m not mistaken, was not known as BBM then.

And then it is reported that he is “leading in all surveys.”

Presidentiable Isko Moreno Domagoso however says in the mayoral race for Manila then in 2019, he was “only third in the survey…”

This means he doesn’t believe in surveys because if that were so, no need for elections anymore! I think that’s what the other presidentiables like Manny Pacquiao, Ping Lacson, Ka Leody, Dr Jose Montemayor, Faisal Mangondato, Ernesto Abella, Norberto Gonzales think.

And then we hear of VP Leni challenging BBM debate with her.

So it was 1985 all over again when then-candidate Cory challenged an ailing FM to a debate!

“But how can a ‘pelen’ housewife defeat a top lawyer like FM in a debate ?” I asked my friend, Al, then.

“How can he debate when he has a machine attached to his back,” answered Al.

Everybody knew then that Marcos was mortally sick with lupus, but I don’t think that BBM has a machine too attached to his back? That’s why he can’t be present in many of the debates or interviews? Maybe he just doesn’t like the sponsors’ faces?

Whatever, I can’t help thinking of a sense of deja vu! Like we’ve been here before, we've been through all these before, and it’s a strange and eerie feeling!
