ILIGAN City ― There's a "new start" for all of us, first articulated by a medical doctor, Dr. Edcel Cabaluna. And this, I think is good for practically all of us, who are currently challenged by this "hotness" within us.
Cabaluna says "new start" is really a code word or words. "N" stands for "nutrition." Give our bodies the right nutrition. But what consists of the "right'' ones?
Among others, these consist of mostly veggies. Another doctor, Dr. Daniel Serrano says, 80% of the nutrients we get inside our body, should be vegetables and maybe fruits-- meaning plant-based foods, and only 20% from meat, or animal-based foods. And I just found out some contradictions in the things that were taught to us before. Like milk, for instance, or dairy products. We were told then that these were very good for us. In fact, it was then touted that "milk is a complete food."
Yet, now these doctors consider milk and dairy products, like cheese, butter, margarine, etc. to be "really not very good," especially in this still Covid-19 time. Because they are "mucous-forming." Ha?
In these categories too come cola drinks, ice cream, and allied foods. And "fast foods" too.
But can we avoid them altogether? And there are "junk foods" too!
And then we have the letter " E". Which stands for "exercise." Which I think means "body movement." So, maybe, that includes walking, running, dancing, and maybe even singing. Although in the latter, it is the mouth that makes most of the movement, and the insides of the mouth. Although if we are so keen on this aspect, our bodies move too, as we have to emphasize what we are singing about. So, singing English songs is good in this aspect. for most English songs are bouncy, compared to "Bisaya" or Tagalog songs, which dwell mostly in the "sadness" of the heart.
Unlike the English ones which even if the heart is already broken, we are still bouncing. As in "I know, you don't love me no more/ no more!" And what is there to bounce about when your honey doesn't love you anymore?
I don't know too if "exercise in futility" is included in the kind of exercise that is good for our bodies.
"W" stands for "water." Well, water is among the mantra we hear these days when the "heat index" is soaring to the high heavens. I remember too when I was a kid of some rhyme which says: "Water, water, put out fire. Fire will not burn the stick. The stick will not beat the pig. The pig will not jump over the fence. And I cannot get home tonight."
"S" stands for "sunshine." Which it is said, is the source of Vitamin D. Yet we are cautioned too that we mustn't have too much of it. For we might get, sunburned, or heat stroke.
"T'' stands for "temperance." So, if we are angry, we should not be very, very angry. Or else, the extreme anger will affect our health. No further elaboration, on this matter, your honors.
"A" stands for "air." We must have air. Of the fresh kind. Not the polluted kind. Or else…
"R" stands for "rest." Who doesn't need to rest? Even God rested on a day, we are told. Allied to this is recreation. Us Filipinos, among our favorites these days are "videoke." But one's singing might be an annoyance to another. Therefore, we too must analyze that our singing does not "annoy" the neighborhood.
We too must have plenty of "sleep." As in six to seven hours each day. Especially during the night.
But how many of us are making "morning the night"? Because we are still "busy" doing some scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling in our gadgets?
"T" means "trust in the Lord." This needs no further elaboration. We have the ten commanders, I mean, the "ten commandments" that should serve as the number one guide in "trusting" in a being higher than us. Yet, we are aware too of other "Lords" like "drug lords" or the "political lord." Or other kinds of lords. Who is lording it over our daily lives? The operative word therefore should be: Careful, careful.
