DIGOS City ― Five individuals landed in jail for seine fishing in a protected area in Pasig Islet, Barangay Bato, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Lt. Colonel Kristopher Sabsal, Sta. Cruz police chief confirmed to have received a call from Benjamin Adtoon, Jr., a member of the Municipal Fishery Law Enforcement Team (MFLET) on the sighting of illegal fishers using seine (Baling) inside the marine protected area.

When police arrived, the five suspects were already placed under arrest by the MFLET at about 8:30 pm on April 26.

Sabsal identified the fishermen as Aljem, 33; Junel, 32; Melvin, 46; Ryan, 20; and Ian, 43. All are residents of Purok Maligaya-B, Sitio Lawis, Barangay Bato in Sta. Cruz town.

The authorities seized two non-motorized boats, fish, a more or less 20-meter-long seine net, two paddles, and at least five kilograms of assorted fish.

All pieces of evidence were placed under the custody of the MFLET based in Barangay Zone-3 of Sta. Cruz will be utilized during the filing of administrative sanctions against the suspects, the report said.
