BRIGADIER Gen. Michele Anayron Jr., commander of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID), on Tuesday, April 8, urged Filipinos to foster patriotism by defending the West Philippine Sea and rejecting foreign narratives, particularly those coming from China.
Speaking during the launch of 4ID’s News Bayani Update, Anayron emphasized the importance of public awareness in the face of growing tensions in the region.
“When it comes to the West Philippine Sea, we are not yet united with one voice to condemn China’s aggressive actions that threaten our sovereignty,” Anayron said.
He pointed out that the military is ramping up its information campaign to educate the public — especially in Northern Mindanao — on the complexities of territorial defense and the importance of standing behind the nation’s position.
“To all of us who are patriots, we must care, support, and speak with one voice,” he added.
Anayron also warned that some Filipinos may unknowingly adopt foreign perspectives, influenced by China’s deliberate efforts to exert influence not only militarily but also economically and culturally.
“We should be vigilant and ensure that our sovereignty is not compromised,” he said.
The general noted that the military is currently in a pre-deployment phase as China’s activities near Philippine borders grow increasingly assertive. He addressed critics who question the military’s stance, saying their actions are based on intelligence and a buildup of critical information — not political motivations.
“This issue is deeper than politics. It’s not about administration versus opposition. It’s a serious matter of national security,” he said.
Anayron urged the public to trust the Armed Forces and support efforts to protect the country’s territorial integrity.
